NHS Grapplers Fall To Bethel In Season Finale, Compete In SWCs

Newtown High School’s wrestling team concluded the regular season with a 38-30 setback at Bethel on February 11 then placed sixth among 13 teams in the South-West Conference Championships, held in New Milford February 13-14. Host New Milford captured first with 195.50 points. Newtown had 87 points to edge Stratford (86) to finish among the top half of the conference’s teams..

SWC Highlights

John Gouveia won his 150th match before falling in the championship round. Newtown had three wrestlers place in the top four as follows:

130: John Gouveia earned second place (Andrew Lischke, Bethel, dec 6-5)

285: David Bray earned second place (Dan Minardi, Masuk, 5-2)

119: Ian McEvoy earned fourth place (Paul Chavez, Oxford, pin 4:11)

NHS will compete in the CIAC Class LL Championships February 20 and 21 in Trumbull.
