Diabetes Workshop Series In Southbury
SOUTHBURY â Area residents are invited to a new program about the prevention of diabetes hosted by Brownstein Jewish Family Service. âSugar Tips: Recognition and Prevention of Diabetesâ is a free, four-week series open to the public presented by Sandra Micalizzi, APRN, CDE, the Heart Center of Greater Waterburyâs clinical nurse specialist.
The program will meet on four Wednesdays, March 5 through 26, from 1 to 2 pm, in the library at the Walzer Family Jewish Community Campus, 444 Main Street North.
Ms Micalizziâs goal is to help the public recognize symptoms and understand metabolic syndrome and factors associated with the development of diabetes. The four-week series includes suggestions for lifestyle modifications to prevent diabetes with an emphasis on diet and exercise.
âIt is important for the public to know that diabetes is a major risk factor for heart disease,â said Ms Micalizzi. âBy preventing diabetes you can help prevent heart disease.â
Diabetes is a widespread health problem with more than 6.2 million individuals with undiagnosed diabetes in the United States. To register for the sessions call the Heart Center of Greater Waterbury at 575-5573.
