Series Of NFA Snowshoe Hikes Begin This Weekend
Newtown Forest Association (NFA) Hike Leader Aaron Coopersmith is encouraging everyone to grab a pair of snowshoes and “dress for success,” for a series of upcoming snowshoe hikes on NFA-owned preserves.
Upcoming dates for the hikes, open to the public, are Saturday, February 28 at Holcombe Hill, 65 Great Hill Road, at 12:30 pm; Thursday, March 5, at 7:30 pm, for a Full Moon Snowshoe Hike; Saturday, March 7, at 12:30 pm, at Brunot Preserve, 124 Taunton Hill Road; and then back at Holcombe Hill on Saturday, March 21, at 12:30 pm.
Children are welcome, as well as pets on a leash.
Participants should dress for the weather, and bring their own bottled water and a snack. Guests should meet at hike sites at the times listed.
Mr Coopersmith said the NFA members offer hikes and other activities “to bring people to the property and show them the sights.” Each preserve or other NFA parcel contains its own natural features, plant and animal species, views, and natural settings. Guests are encouraged to identify birds and animals, trees, plant life, and natural features. Residents can also learn about property history.
To become an NFA member and help support preservation of private land, residents are encouraged to join the land trust. Membership for a family is $35. Individual membership is $25.
