Environmental Energy Services Wins Contract With Florida's Largest Electric Company
Environmental Energy Services Wins Contract
With Floridaâs Largest Electric Company
Newtown-based Environmental Energy Services has been selected by Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) to manage the fuel treatment process for the entire boiler fleet at FPLâs oil-fired power plants in the state of Florida.
FPL is Floridaâs largest electric utility, servicing more than eight million people.
The multiyear, multimillion-dollar contract award follows a review and subsequent consolidation of combustion engineering companies that handled fuel treatment at FPL properties.
Environmental Energy Services (EES) will expand the application of its custom specialty chemical range and diagnostic testing package for oil-fired boilers, called EES Processâ¢, throughout FPLâs facilities in Florida. Since 1992, EES has managed the treatment of residual oil that FPL burns to make electricity at various FPL power plants.
Fuel treatment programs are designed to enhance operations, reduce maintenance, and decrease emissions of detrimental pollutants.
EES is a leading provider of advanced fuel treatment systems and services for some of the largest oil-fired boilers operated by utilities and industries across North America. EES has successfully tested combustion and emissions optimization products and services for coal-fired boilers as well.
âOur products and service went head-to-head with some of the biggest names in the fuel treatment industry and ours came out on top,â said Richard Nowak, president of Environmental Energy Services.
Up until this year, FPL supervised as many as five different companies, each of which applied its own fuel treatment services at FPLâs oil-burning power generation sites scattered throughout southern Florida and along the stateâs eastern seaboard. The group represented the top names in utility industry fuel treatment.
Several months ago, the companies were given an opportunity to compete for an expanded role with FPL. Following the review, FPL offered EES an exclusive multiyear deal that consolidates the role of combustion enhancement at oil-fired FPL plants that generate over 7,000 megawatts of electricity.
Not only does the deal include EESâs customized application systems, using the companyâs own chemicals, but FPL also turned over responsibility for systems upgrade optimization and technical support. EES will employ its own specialty diagnostic services to ensure efficient treatment system-wide. The Newtown company has already installed a significant number of new advanced application systems, all made by EES and American suppliers.
The bulk of EES core business deals with oil-fired utility boilers, though the company has also developed a system to service coal-fired boilers. Initial trials have shown that CoalTreat⢠reduces slagging, improves heat transfer, and increases plant generation efficiency.
The local company is also working on a mercury control technology and a performance combustion catalyst that increases efficiency of fuel while reducing carbon emissions. The company has an active relationship with Connecticut Innovations, the quasi-public organization driving technology innovation in Connecticut through a variety of investment funds and programs.
