Next Relay For Life Meeting Is March 7
Relay For Life of Newtownâs next organizational meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 7, from 7 to 8 pm, in the Newtown High School Lecture Hall. Anyone considering participating in the relay for the first time, is encouraged to attend this meeting, according to relay public relations chair Dawn Escoda.
Past participants are also invited to attend to learn about enhancements and changes that are being implemented this year.
Relay For Life is a community-driven overnight walkathon designed to spread hope, celebrate life, and raise money for research and programs of the American Cancer Society. After dark on the night of the relay, a luminaria ceremony is planned where candles are lit in honor of or in remembrance of those who have been touched by cancer.
This is a special and popular aspect of the relay that anyone can support, regardless of whether they are participating in the relay as a volunteer or team member. Luminarias can be purchased on the local relay website or from participating team members.
Relay is also a venue for interactive education and informed delivery. Participants learn about the American Cancer Society, its programs, and ways to prevent cancer.
This yearâs Relay For Life will take place at the Newtown High School Blue and Gold Stadium beginning at 5 pm June 9, and ending at 5 am June 10.
This year marks the introduction of the âKids For A Cureâ minirelay, which will take place from 3 pm to 5 pm for children in kindergarten through fourth grade. Registration will take place at the elementary schools.
The relay will also recognize all local cancer survivors who are invited to a reception starting at 6 pm. Various committees are already hard at work to provide a fun and inspirational event once again this year, Ms Escoda said.
âEven if you cannot participate on a team this year, please mark your calendars and come out and support our teams and honor our survivors by walking a lap or two,â she added.
Anyone interested in learning more about the 2007 Relay, starting a team or attending the survivor reception, is asked to come to the March 7 meeting, or to contact Helen Benson or Kathryn Wolf at 426-3782.
