It’s Coming!

NYS’s Annual Dinner Dance/Auction — Saturday, March 13, at 7 pm. Get a table together for this fun-filled event. New band! Tickets are $40 per person and are available at Bob Tendler’s office or at NYS. Call for further details.

Mark Your Calendars!

The NYS Annual Talent Show is Friday, May 7. Auditions will be held March 30 and April 1 from 3 to 5 pm and April 5 and 7 from 4 to 6 pm. Call today to schedule an audition time.

High School Parent, Teacher, Student Association (HSPTSA) will hold an organizational meeting on Tuesday, March 23, from 7:30 to 8:30 am. A second meeting is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, May 5, at 7 pm. A continental breakfast will be served. If you are interested in learning more about what your high school student is experiencing, call Newtown High School at 426-7676.

Community service opportunities are still available. Call for additional information.

 

Volunteers Needed

NYS is moving in early 2004 and is seeking assistance. Anyone who can lend a hand in any way would certainly be appreciated. This is also a great opportunity for community service! Please call NYS if you would like to spend some time helping us.

Job Bank

Job Bank is a service available to residents in need of assistance with jobs such as yard work, snow removal, babysitting, help with parties, computers, office work, and more. Contact Erin at NYS with your job request and she can suggest a fee schedule appropriate for each job situation.

Moms Groups

Moms of Babies birth to 12 months: Tuesdays, 10:30 to 11:30 am.

Moms of Toddlers 12 to 18 months: Thursdays, 10:30 to 11:30 am.

 

Moms of Multiples/Ongoing: Will meet monthly until the spring. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, March 10 from 9:30 to 10:30 am.

 

Working Moms/Ongoing: On hiatus.

Parent Programs

Parent Connection is an organization formed by concerned parents and other informed citizens of Newtown to address the problem of substance use and abuse in our community.

“Prescription Medication or Drug of Abuse?” will be the next Parent Connection forum, held on Wednesday, March 24, from 7 to 9 pm, at Newtown Middle School.

The following Parent Workshops will be offered:

“Risk and Protective Factors: How is a child prone to risky behavior?” will be held on Thursday, March 11, from 7:30 to 9 pm, facilitated by District Health Coordinator Judy Blanchard.

“Parenting 101: Tips to Maintain Your Sanity — Despite Your Child” will be held on Tuesday, March 16, from 7:30 to 9 pm, facilitated by Roseanne Loring, life skills education coordinator for Newtown Youth Services.

“How Parenting Can Encourage Self-Esteem” will be held on Thursday, April 1, from 7:30 to 9 pm, facilitated by Kim Scott, clinical director of the Family Counseling Center.

Fee for each workshop is $10 per person, $15 per couple. Proceeds will benefit the Parent Connection. Space is limited, registration required. Call NYS for more information.

Hope and Support Group: If you are a parent with questions or concerns about your child’s possible or confirmed involvement with substances, you are invited to attend the Hope and Support group. This group meets Mondays from 7:30 to 9:30 pm in the Parents’ Corner. All are welcome.

 

Youth Programs

Super Sitters — Dates for the June session will be June 28–30 and July 1–2 from 1 to 2:30 pm. Fee is $40, space is limited. Call NYS to register.

 

Children of Divorce Support Group: Meets the first and third Monday of the month. The next meeting will be Monday, March 22 from 6 to 7:15 pm.

Sib-Shops Support Group: For siblings of children who have disabilities will meet the second Monday of the month. The next meeting will be Monday, March 8, from 5 to 7 pm. For questions or further information contact Laurie at NYS.

4H: Grades 5 and 6, Tuesdays, 3 to 4:30 pm. As of Tuesday, March 9, meetings will be held at the Greenhouse.

HYSAB: The next meeting will be Monday, March 15, at 5:45 pm.

MSYAB: The next meeting will be Wednesday, March 10, at 2:15 pm.

 

NYCAAP: (Newtown Youth Creating AIDS Awareness for Peers) Call for meeting schedule.
