Every Vote Counts!
Every Vote Counts!
To the Editor:
With this yearâs town budget referendum approaching, I want to take this opportunity to remind all Newtown residents (every family member that is of voting age) to get out and vote in support of our town and school budget this year.
Last year was a total disaster for our town and schools! As many of you know, school programs were cut or altered due to the massive cuts the budget defeat imposed on our school system. With the importance of maintaining a culturally balanced school system, ours was forced to halt the fourth grade orchestra program. Instead of progression, our school system was forced to regression. I cannot believe that is what Newtown residents who have a vested interest in this town truly want.
Last year was an unusual year with the uncertainty of our properties being revalued. This year there is no excuse; all eligible voters in every household need to come and support our town and school budget. A continued trend of defeats will have an adverse effect on our property values and our school system. It clearly sends a negative message that I know I do not need to explain any further.
Our elected Board of Finance and Legislative Council are currently reviewing our town and school budget. They too are faced with determining what is the right thing to do for this town and school system. I trust during their review and analysis they will take into consideration the negative impact last yearâs massive budget cuts have already made and how future cuts will continue to erode our town and schools.      Â
On Tuesday, April 27, I urge all register voters in our town to get out and vote in support of our town and school budget.   Â
Sincerely,
Jackie Himmelfarb
