Relay For Life Kickoff Set For March 8

The American Cancer Society invites individuals who want to honor cancer survivors and caregivers, or pay tribute to loved ones lost to cancer, to its Relay For Life kickoff rally at 6:30 pm on Monday, March 8, at the Newtown Middle School cafeteria, 11 Queen Street.

The Relay For Life kickoff rally is where everyone — families, caregivers, cancer survivors, schools, companies — get together to launch the Relay For Life in their community.

In 1985, Relay For Life began with one man who walked and ran around a track for 24 hours raising $27,000. This year, Relay For Life is scheduled to be hosted in more than 4,200 communities. It will be held in Newtown on June 12 at Newtown High School.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is an overnight community celebration during which individuals and teams camp out, barbecue, dance, and take turns walking around a track relay-style to raise funds to fight cancer. At nightfall, participants will light hundreds of luminarias (candle lanterns) in a heartwarming ceremony to honor cancer survivors as well as friends and family members lost to the disease.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life represents hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.

To join Relay For Life, or sign up for the kickoff, call Dawn Escoda at 270-7541 or Ivette Geric at 426-2589

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.
