Babe Ruth Girls Softball Seeks Support

To the Editor:

At the end of the girls’ softball season in the spring of 2000, a young resident of Newtown wrote a letter to the editor of The Newtown Bee. She described the poor state of girls’ softball in Newtown. She wrote about the bad playing field, the lack of equipment, and the general lack of interest in her sport. She called for an improvement in Newtown girls’ softball and asked for the community’s aid. She put into words what many felt about the league.

Newtown Girls Softball has been organized by the Newtown Babe Ruth Girls Softball Association. The mission statement of the new organization includes “…promoting skill development, fostering team participation, teaching the rules of the game and most importantly, [teaching] the standards and concepts necessary [for the players] to contribute to their team, families, classmates and community.”

The Newtown Babe Ruth Girls Softball Association knows that a successful league is dependent upon the commitment of the players and families and also upon community support. As a new league with limited assets, the Softball Association has complied a Wish List of items and resources that are needed to help make this and future seasons successful. Sponsor donations, fundraisers, and registration fees will be used to purchase some of the items on the Wish List but further support is needed in services, volunteerism, and donations.

The Newtown Babe Ruth Girls Softball Association is asking the community to consider contributing either services or donations. Donations can be sent to Treasurer Richard Van  Waalwijk at 16 Concord Ridge Road in Newtown. If you are interested in donating services or in volunteering, please contact Pete Blomberg, President, at 203/270-1844.

We want to thank you for you anticipated support and to let you know that the Softball Association will do everything that it can to make the 2001 season challenging, uplifting, and fun for its players!

Your support will not go unnoticed!

Peter Blomberg, President & Paul LaFrancesca, VP
