NEW MILFORD – The Newtown Nitros (Girls’ U12) won six games and tied one, outscoring their opponents 12-2, to capture the Girls U12 championship title in the Canterbury Tournament on Saturday, March 3.

Darcy Fiscella led the charge scoring eight goals in seven games.

The games:

Nitros 1, Danbury 1: The Nitros got off to a slow start with their first game in the tournament, but still managed to pull off a tie with Darcy Fiscella scoring the lone goal in the 1-1 tie against Danbury. Strong defensive efforts on the part of Kristene Salbu, Meridith Palo and Jennifer Iassogna prevented Danbury from scoring more than once.

Nitros 3, Brookfield 0: Lindsay Weber scored a pair of goals and Meredith Palo added another. The strong defense led by Rose Jackman and Kristene Salbu frustrated the Brookfield team.

Nitros 2, Brookfield 0: A second match-up with Brookfield had the Nitros once again coming out on top, this time with Darcy Fiscella and Sara Peters scoring one apiece. Strong defensive moves on the part of Meredith Palo and Rose Jackman coupled with Sarah Gutbrod’s keeper skills led to another shutout for the Newtown team.

Nitros 2, Danbury 1: Darcy Fiscella scored a pair of goals to give Newtown the win. Jennifer Greenwood’s beautifully executed give-and-goes were a big factor in the Nitro’s success as well as great contributions by Rachel Eastman and Heather Young.

Nitros 3, Torrington 0: Darcy Fiscella was a powerhouse, scoring three goals in quick succession in the semi-final game against Torrington. Erica Vacaro, Rachel Eastman, Heather Young, and Sarah Wilson gave good support as outside forwards and Kristene Salbu, Meredith Palo, and Jennifer Iassogna were solid on defense. Sara Peters shutout Torrington in goal.

Nitros 1, Watertown 0: The Nitros were matched up against a very talented Watertown team for the championship game of the tournament. Darcy Fiscella scored off of a penalty kick early in the game and – through great teamwork on the part of all of the Nitros including Erica Vacaro, Jennifer Greenwood, Sarah Wilson, and Lindsay Weber – the Nitros were able to capture the title.
