Arguello Wins State Open Title As Hawk Wrestling Team Places Sixth
Led by Antonio Arguello’s win in the 157 pound weight division, the Newtown High School wrestling team placed sixth in the State Open, held at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven, February 27 and 28. Arguello is the tenth wrestler in NHS history to capture a State Open championship and the junior captain also recorded his 150th victory. Arguello scored an 8-4 decision over Notre Dame-West Haven’s Riley Storozuk in the finals.
Newtown was sixth among 115 teams with only five wrestlers. Unlike many team sports that compete in their state division by school size, the State Open is an overall state championship with the top six wrestlers per division (S, M, L, LL) competing in a two-day tournament to determine the best of the top 24 wrestlers per weight.
Nighthawk sophomore Owen Blair placed sixth in the 113 division. Captain and favorite to win the 175 bracket Jake Maddox suffered a knee injury in the semifinals and had to default out of the tournament following a bye, pinfall victory, and technical fall win. His teammates and coaches wish him a quick recovery so that he can prepare for the Connecticut Freestyle team and national tournaments around the country this offseason.
