Dance Team Wins State Jazz Championship
Newtown High School’s dance team earned the State Championship in the Large Varsity Jazz division at Farmington High School on February 28. This marks four state championships in a row. The seniors claimed the title all four years under the direction of Head Coach Emily Marks, who took over coaching duties four years ago.
The Nighthawks also placed third in Pom; Wethersfield was second and Hamden took first. Newtown’s Jazz and Pom routines qualified the team for New England Regionals, which are in Framingham, Mass. on March 14.
Assistant Coach Lindsay Brestovansky helps lead the team. Dancers are: Senior captains Piper Adolfson, Aquinnah Schmidt, Sophia Martinez, and Phoenix Sealey; seniors Kesslyn Alvarez, Olivia Gulalo, Kathryn Kavovit, Alexa Schmid, Kayla Sinapi, and Lila Spencer; juniors Ava Geiger, Astrid Martin, and Gabi Weiss; sophomores Ava Jackson, Kailyn Lahey, and Sophia Lasaro; and freshmen Emory Alvarez, Mackenzie Miskelly, Keegan Shope, and Kaela Zemo.
