Church Plans Pony Express

The Pony Express rider, Cindy Miller, will kick off the Stewardship Campaign for the Newtown Congregational Church Sunday morning, March 12, when she arrives at the close of the morning worship service to receive her saddle bag and gallop up West Street as youth member Christine Bennet heralds the event on the trumpet.

Nearly 45 Trail Bosses will facilitate the delivery of saddlebags by the route riders. Bags will contain pledge cards for the recipients to fill out and pass on to the next delivery point. This is the second consecutive year for the Pony Express and the general manager, Brian Finlayson, and his assistant general, John Matz, are hoping for the same ten percent increase in dollars pledged and number of pledges as they received last year.

Trail Bosses and volunteers will meet for breakfast Sunday morning at 8:30 before the worship service in the undercroft to receive their instructions. Delivery of the saddle bags from one member to another are usually within the same neighborhood and facilitate members getting to know each other, as well as private and thoughtful pledging. Pledges are sealed before being passed.
