The following Scholarships have arrived in the Career Center at Newtown High School.  Applications and/or information for these scholarships, as well as ones previously listed in the Bee, are available there.  Please call Mrs McEvoy at 426-1915 if you have any questions.

The Connecticut Association of Therapeutic Recreation Directors – offers an annual scholarship of $250 to a high school senior pursuing a degree in the field of therapeutic recreation.  Applications are due by May 1, 2000.

New England Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers Annual Scholarship – This association offers three $1,000 scholarships to three high school graduates.  One scholarship will go to a graduate who will be attending a private four-year college or university, one to a graduate who will be attending a four-year public college or university, and one for a graduate who will attend a community college.  The recipients must have earned at least a 3.0 and be recommended by their guidance counselor.  Application deadline is March 31, 2000.

Sons of Portugal Scholarship Fund – local students of Portuguese descent are eligible to apply for this scholarship.  Applications are due April 1 and details are available in the Career Center.

The John C. “Chips” Quinn, Jr. Scholarship/Yankee Press Education Network – offers a $1,000 scholarship to a minority student interested in studying journalism in college.  Selection will be based upon a letter of nomination, academic performance, personal statement and samples of student’s journalistic work.  Applications must be postmarked by May 26, 2000.

Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network of CT – GLSEN – two $500 scholarships for students who have worked to ensure that all students are valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.  Must be attending an eligible secondary or post-secondary institution next year.  One of these scholarships is specifically to be awarded to a student who has worked within a GSA (gay/straight alliance).  In addition to these two scholarships, grants will be offered to underclassmen.  Details are in the Career Center.  Deadline is April 1, 2000.

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International –

1.  The Elizabeth Sonier grant in the amount of $750 will be awarded to a graduating senior planning to major in Music Education.  Completed applications are due by March 22, 2000.

The Hannah Griswold grant in the amount of $750 will be awarded to a minority graduating senior planning to complete a teacher education program.  Application deadline is March 22, 2000.

Town and Country Garden Club – one time scholarship award in the amount of $350 presented for study in the fields of environmental science, turf management, forestry or horticulture.  Deadline is April 1, 2000.

Head O’Meadow Scholarship – two $1,000 scholarships to seniors from Newtown High School who have attended Head O’Meadow School, rank in the top half of their graduating class and have been accepted to a post-academic program.  The application deadline is May 2, 2000.

Sandy Hook School PTA Scholarship – scholarship(s) up to $1,000 and Book Award(s) up to $500 for high school seniors who have attended Sandy Hook Elementary School and will be attending a post-high school academic program.  Application deadline is April 14, 2000.
