Canterbury School in New Milford has named three area students to its honor roll for the third marking period of the 2000-2001 school year. Allison Grant, daughter of Stephen and Susan Grant of Newtown, is a senior who achieved honors this marking period. Adam Hopkins, son of Trevor and Irene Hopkins of Newtown, is a sophomore who was named to the honors honor roll. Sarah Pollock, daughter of Paul and Cynthia Pollock of Sandy Hook, is a senior who achieved honors.

Captain William C. Gottmeier has been named Company Commander, 5th Ranger Training Battalion, Camp Merrill, Ga., where he will command the training company at the Mountain Training Phase of the US Army Ranger Training Brigade. Capt Gottmeier graduated from Newtown High School in 1989 and is a 1994 graduate of the US Military Academy at West Point.

Capt Gottmeier’s military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Air Assault Badge, Parachutist Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, and the Ranger Tab. His most recent assignment was commander of C Company, 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum in New York.

He and his wife, Heather, have two children and will reside in Dahlonege, Georgia. Capt Gottmeier is the son of the LTC (Retired) Richard and Holly Gottmeier of Sandy Hook.

Matthew Klaus, son of Ellen and Berny Klaus of Newtown, will be attending the National Young Leaders Conference (NYLC) from March 20 to March 25 in Washington, D.C. The NYLC is a unique leadership development program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit. Matthew, a junior at Immaculate High School, will be among 350 outstanding National Scholars from around the country to attend the conference.

The theme of the NYLC is “The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today.” Throughout the six-day conference, Matthew will interact with key leaders and newsmakers from the three branches of government, the media, and the diplomatic corps.

Christian Heritage School in Trumbull announced four students from the area who were named to the second marking period honor roll. Tenth graders Catherine Eaton and Jonathan Kessler as well as seventh graders Chelsey Hawkins and Jessica Rardin achieved at least a 3.35 grade point average to be named to the honor roll.

Michael Pierce of Sandy Hook was among a group of 60 students from Siena College who took part in a week of service to the poor. His group traveled to Greenville, South Carolina, where they worked with Habitat for Humanity constructing housing for the elderly. Other students assisted at St Francis Inn, a soup kitchen in Loudonville, New York, where Siena is located.

Ruth Wolferseder of Sandy Hook has been accepted into the Education Department of Eastern Connecticut State University. There were 132 applicants and only 36 were accepted. Miss Wolferseder will be completing a standard five-year education program in four years, graduating in May of 2002. She currently teaches two history classes at Windam High School in Willamantic, Conn. She plans to teach history and will be prepared to teach American Studies classes as well.

Miss Wolferseder is a member of Eastern’s competitive Dance Team. The team will again be competing in the national competition in Daytona Beach, Florida, in April. The team placed third in Connecticut State Open Cheerleading and Dance Team Competition at Quinnipiac University in February.

She is the daughter of Frank Wolferseder of Newtown and Lyn Beatty of Sandy Hook.
