Burglary/Larceny
Police report that on the afternoon of March 1, they executed an arrest warrant at the home of Gregory Zimnoch, 26, in Monroe, charging him with third-degree burglary and with third-degree larceny.
The arrest stems from a November 2006 complaint, which resulted in an investigation that revealed that Zimnoch had stolen tools and scrap metal from a home on Botsford Hill Road in Botsford, police said.
Both of the charges are felonies. After arrest processing, police released Zimnoch on $5,000 bail for a March 15 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.
Icy Road
About 5:30 am March 3, motorist Amanda Buchholz, 21, of 104 Waterview Drive, who was driving a 1997 Dodge Neon southward near 18 Pole Bridge Road, was taking a curve in the road to the right, but encountered ice and the vehicle went out of control, police report.
The Dodge slid across the street and struck a large rock and a mailbox, police said. Buchholz was not injured. Police took no enforcement.
Postal Truck
Motorist Mary Shaw, 67, of Scenic View Drive was driving a 1994 Grumann postal truck southward along the right road shoulder and was preparing to stop to deliver mail at 4 Boggs Hill Road at about 1:12 pm February 28, when Shaw turned to the left abruptly in order to avoid hitting a small animal, police said.
At that time, southbound motorist Kimberly Parrilla, 20, of Willow Brook Lane, who was driving a 2006 Mercedes-Benz sedan, was passing the postal truck on the left, police said.
The postal truck struck the right side of the sedan, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Shaw a written warning for making a restricted turn.
Slippery Road
About 8 am March 3, motorist Megan Whitmore, 17, of Raleigh, N.C., who was driving a 2003 Mitsubishi Galant northward near 11 Taunton Lane, started to take a curve in the road, but slid on the icy pavement and hit a utility pole, police said.
Ambulance volunteers treated Whitmore at the scene for pain, police said. Police verbally warned Whitmore for traveling at a speed too fast for conditions.
I-Pod Thefts
After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, a 15-year-old boy turned himself in at the police station on March 1, and was charged with fourth degree larceny, conspiracy to commit fourth-degree larceny, and aiding fourth-degree larceny.
Police said the arrest stems from a January 2 incident at Newtown High School in which several iPod personal digital music players were stolen from various studentsâ backpacks that were left in a boysâ locker room.
Fourth-degree larceny involves the theft of items worth between $500 and $1,000.
Police released the boy into the custody of his father for a March 12 appearance in Danbury Juvenile Court. State law shields the disclosure of the identities of those under age 18 who are charged with crimes.
Bus Accident
State police report an accident involving a coach bus, a sport-utility vehicle, and a sedan on Interstate 84 about 5 pm March 2.
State police said motorist Stanley Hinkley, 67, of Winn, Maine, who was driving a 2001 Buick LeSabre sedan westward on I-84, just east of the Exit 10 off-ramp, was changing lanes on a trilane section of the roadway when he collided with westbound motorist Robert Reed, 49, of Trevett, Maine, who was driving a 1996 GMC Yukon.
The Buick then went out of control and collided with a westbound 1998 Prevost bus driven by Daniel St Pierre, no age given, of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, according to state police. The Buick then struck some guardrailing. The bus was in the exit lane for Exit 10 when the collision occurred.
There were no injuries. The bus was carrying an unspecified number of occupants. The bus is registered in New Brunswick, Canada.
State police said Hinkley made an improper lane change.
Highway Crash
Motorist Gazmen Memeti, 32, of Waterbury was driving a 1993 Nissan Maxima westward on Interstate 84, west of Exit 11, when the Nissan struck some guard cabling and some guardrailing on the left side of the roadway early on March 1, state police said.
Memeti was not injured. State police charged him with evading responsibility and with failure to stay in the established lane.
Sandy Hook MVA
Police report a two-vehicle accident on Sweet Briar Lane at its intersection with Jeremiah Road during rainy conditions about 8:40 am March 2.
In that accident, motorist James Culver, 36, of Danbury, who was driving a 1998 International 4000 truck southward on Sweet Briar Lane, struck the rear end of a southbound 2004 Honda Pilot driven by Dawn Coughlin, 45, of 12 Sweet Briar Lane, police said. When the accident occurred, the Honda was stopped at a stop sign.
There were no injuries. Culver received a written warning for following too closely.
Icy Conditions
Motorist Maxwell Beaudry, 19, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2004 Ford pickup truck southward near 36 Currituck Road about 8:18 am March 3, attempted to take a curve in the road, but lost control of the vehicle on the icy pavement and went off the left side of the street, striking a tree broadside, after which the truck reentered the road, police said.
Beaudry was not injured. Police verbally warned Beaudry for traveling at a speed too fast for conditions.
Burglary/Larceny
Police are investigating a crime that occurred early on the morning of March 6 at Hilarioâs Variety Store at 131 Mt Pleasant Road (Route 6).
Sometime between 1 and 1:50 am, someone threw a large rock through the glass panel on the front door of the convenience store to gain entry, police said. The burglar then stole numerous packs of various brands of cigarettes. A loss estimate was not available.
Police ask anyone with information about the crime to contact them at 426-5841.
Warrant
On March 5, police arrested a Bridgeport man on six charges on a warrant that stems from a June 2005 incident.
Police said they arrested Vinicius Correa, 20, on charges of second-degree failure to appear in court, driving at an unsafe distance, driving without a license, driving with an improper muffler, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Police said they stopped Correa on South Main Street on June 23, 2005, for motor vehicle violations, after which they pressed the original charges.
After posting $2,500 bail, police released Correa for a March 20 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.
DUI Arrest
Police said that after observing a driving violation, they stopped motorist Tabitha Knibbs, 22, of Bristol on Mt Pleasant Road at about 12:30 am March 8.
After investigating, police charged Knibbs with driving under the influence and with a travel lane violation.
Following processing, police released Knibbs on $100 bail for a March 22 court appearance.
