Esther Marie Braun Michel

Founder Of Westport Young Women’s League

Esther Marie Braun Michel, 88, of Stratford, wife of Philip L. Michel, formerly of Weston, Conn., and Manhasset, N.Y., died March 5 at Bridgeport Hospital. She was born in Flushing, N.Y., the daughter of Joseph and Catherine Brennan Braun.

Survivors in addition to her husband include one daughter, Kathleen Weller and her husband, Gary, of Newtown. Mrs Michel is also survived by three grandchildren, Stephanie Wright and her husband, Brendan, Scott Sigmund and his wife, Angela, and Michele Lyons; five great-grandchildren, Kelly, Kaidyn, Landyn, Dustin, and Alesia; one brother, Joseph W. Braun and his wife, Lorraine, of Patterson, N.Y.; one sister, Kathryn Sennello and her husband, William, of Stratford; and her son-in-law, Richard J. Lyons of West Hempstead, N.Y. Mrs Michel was predeceased by her daughter, Esther Marie Lyons.

Mrs Michel was an active member of the Council of Catholic Women and St Mark’s Guild of Our Lady. She was founder and president of the Westport Young Women’s League, former member and vice president of the Westport Women’s Club, and a member of the Women’s National Republican Club of New York City. She served on the tax study group of Westport and was also a member of the Oronoque Village House and Garden Club.

Funeral services were scheduled for Friday, March 9, at 9 am, from the Dennis & D’Arcy Funeral Home, 2611 Main Street, Stratford, and at 10 am in St Mark’s Church, 500 Wigwam Lane, Stratford, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Monsignor Lawrence McMahon. Calling hours were scheduled for Thursday, March 8, from 4 to 8 pm in the funeral home.
