Norbert V. Lopes, 79, of Brookfield and Hypoluxo, Fla., husband of Jeanne Medeiors Lopes, died at Danbury Hospital, March 5, after a long battle with multiple myeloma.
Mr Lopes was born in Pawtucket, R.I., on June 8, 1927, the son of Alipio Val Lopes and Maria Patrocinia Gomes Lopes. He moved to Danbury at a young age and attended Danbury schools.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Doreen L. Morrissey and her husband, James, of Newtown, and Deborah J. Lopes-Moreno and her husband, Jack, of Southbury; his sister, Olga Oliva and her husband, Eurico, of Danbury; his three grandchildren, Rachel S. Moreno of Maryland, and Jaclyn A. and James E. Morrissey of Newtown; his mother-in-law, Simone Medeiros and brother-in-law, Robert, both of Florida.
He was veteran of the US Army, having served at the end of World War II and in Korea. Upon his return, he worked and then purchased his fatherâs business, Lopes Food Market, and later started Norbert V. Lopes Insurance. He ran both for many years. He was also an officer in the family business, Lopes Travel Agency, Inc.
Mr Lopes was an original member of the Sons of Portugal Band, a founding member of the Sons of Portugal Scholarship Committee, and a longtime member of the Sons of Portugal Club. He was a lifetime member of the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department, Candlewood Company. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Portuguese Cultural Center.
Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury, on Friday, March 9, from 5 to 8 pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Marguerite Bourgeoys Church, Brookfield, on Saturday, March 10, at 10:30 am. Interment will following in St Peter Cemetery, Danbury.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donation by made to St Jude Childrenâs Research Hospital, 501 Saint Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105 or a charity of oneâs choice.
