NEWTOWN 59, BRISTOL 47: Jacky Curran scored 17 points and Ashley Larocque added 16 more as Newtown finished the 2000-01 season at 20-2 with an eight-point win over Bristol â a win that avenged an earlier loss to the Bristol squad. Coach Ken Good preached a balanced team effort and got it, with 10 players all scoring in the win. Swarming defense, aggressive action under the boards, and strong offensive play in the paint helped Newtown overcome Bristol. Emily Nezvesky, Megan LaFlamme and Meghan Kelly combined for 18 points while Katie OâConnor, Siobhan Cooper and Jessica Palermo combined to pull down 20 rebounds. Courtney Brunton and Jackie Ercole also had solid floor games.

BOYS 7TH GRADE

NEWTOWN 32, BROOKFIELD 28: Stephen Kean pulled down 13 rebounds and made a pair of key free throws â while Tommy Wilson added a late, three-point basket â to lift Newtown past Brookfield in the South-West Conference Travel League semi-finals. Marc Ingerman scored 10 points while Drew Harmata had eight points and 12 rebounds. Wilson had five points.
NEWTOWN 53, FAIRFIELD 28: Brian Shimko scored eight points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and made six steals to lead Newtown past Fairfield. Marc Ingerman added 14 points while Stephen Kean, Stephen Neylon and Alister Ratcliff combined for 16 points. Alex Caruso and Tommy Wilson had effective floor games.

BOYS 6TH GRADE

BRIDGEPORT ALL-STARS 46, BLUE DEVILS 36: Jack Quinn and Ryan McGrath scored eight points apiece while Mike Kennedy, Brian Conroy and Joey DeVellis combined for 17 more, but the Blue Devils still fell to a talented Bridgeport team. Tucker Kass and Kevin Regan had strong games off the boards while Tad Pierson, Joe Bowen and Justin Miller powered the defense for the 20-4 Blue Devils.

GIRLS 5TH/6TH GRADE

NEWTOWN 28, WATERTOWN 26: After leading for most of the game, Newtown fell behind late in the fourth quarter, only to rally for the win. Darcy Fiscella had a double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals. Jill Logan added eight rebounds and six steals and combined with Amy Kelley and Samantha Wong for 12 points. Christie Iwanicki had a strong game as well.
NEWTOWN 24, EAST HAVEN 20: Newtown rallied from a seven-point, halftime deficit to win its opening game in the John J. Keegan Memorial Basketball Tournament in Monroe. Newtown held East Haven to just four, second-half points (one in the fourth quarter). Darcy Fiscella had eight points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Christie Iwanicki added six points and four steals while Jill Logan contributed five points, eight rebounds and four steals. Erin Ruddock played a solid defensive game.

NEWTOWN 42, NEW CANAAN 21: Greg Rodden scored eight points while Danny Smith, Matt Boland, and Kevin Troy combined for 18 more to lead Newtown to the win. Bobby Lapple and Jason Smith also combined for eight points. Danny Giorno dished out five assists. Michael Maher, Jared Modzelewski and PJ Cochrane all played well.
NEWTOWN 38, REDDING 30: Greg Rodden scored 12 points and Matt Boland added six to lift Newtown to the win. Danny Giorno, Danny Smith and Kevin Troy combined for 12 points. Jason Smith and Bobby Lapple led the defense.

NEWTOWN 45, HAMDEN 32: Danny Smith and Kevin Troy combined for 25 points to lead Newtown to a win in the first round of the East Haven Tournament. Jason Smith, Michael Maher, Greg Rodden and Bobby Lapple combined for 18 points. PJ Cochrane and Jared Modzelewski led the defense.
NEWTOWN 37, FARNHAM 28: Danny Smith and Greg Rodden combined for 21 points as Newtown advanced again with a victory. Kevin Troy and Danny Giorno combined for 13 points while Jason Smith had a fine floor game. PJ Cochrane, Jared Modzelewski and Bobby Lapple led the defense.
