Relay For Life Kick Off

To the Editor:

On behalf of the Relay for Life of Newtown committee, we would like to thank the community for its outpouring of support at our kick-off rally held on Monday, March 8.

The American Cancer Society has been an active member of Newtown for many years offering a number of patients and their families services, cancer support groups, and lifesaving research. Relay for Life is a community event in every sense of the word. It is a chance for a community to come together for a common cause, to eliminate cancer.

Our community definitely came together Monday night with close to 150 in attendance at our kick off rally. This was a record for the local office of the American Cancer Society. We should be proud of our town and how it is pulling together to make our “first” Relay for Life a huge success.

We would like to extend our thanks to our speakers, Mr Joe Bojnowski from the Board of Selectman and Dr Evan Pitkoff from the Board of Education. Both organizations have been extremely supportive of our efforts. Our thanks also go out to our honorary chairs, the Zarifis Family for the tremendous amount of inspiration they have given to our committee and teams.

Many, many thanks go to Carminuccio’s Pizza and its owners Dave Kennedy and Eddie Martino. Carminuccio’s donated several trays of hot food, salad, bread, and pizzas. Everyone in attendance thoroughly enjoyed Carminuccio’s very generous donation.

Thanks also to The Pepsi Bottling Group who donated several cases of soda and water for the rally. Their generosity is also greatly appreciated.

Our next meeting for team captains and committee members will be held on Monday, April 12, 6:30 pm, at the Newtown Middle School. If you would like further information, please feel free to call one of us.

With Sincere thanks,

Dawn Escoda and Ivette Gerics
