BASEBALL CARDS, MEMORABILIA AT WILLIAM MAY SALE MARCH 31, 5 CUTS

AVV 3-8 #691573

ROCHESTER, N.H. — On Saturday March 31, William May will hold his annual spring sale with baseball cards and memorabilia headlining a jam-packed auction at the American Legion Hall.

Advertising, tobacco and gum cards, historical and political, photo and book lots are but a few of the ephemera categories to be featured. Starting the day, more than 100 numismatic and horological lots will go up for bid.

Fresh to the market will be a collection of baseball cards including turn of the Twentieth Century tobacco cards, vintage 1940s, 50s and 60s cards; full sets of 1954 and 55 Bowmans, 1956 Topps, 1961 Golden Press, 1960 Fleer and 1959 Ted Williams. Ty Cobb, Lou Gehrig, Mantle, DiMaggio, as well as many additional Hall of Fame signed items, and memorabilia from other sports will be offered.

In the world of advertising, several Coca Cola items will be offered, including a 1916 tray, calendars from the 1930s and 40s. A Nineteenth Century Allen and Ginter Tobacco poster “Flags of all Nations” — the same as would have hung in a typical general store during the 1880s and 90s — along with hundreds of vintage tobacco and gum cards and additional tobacco advertising will be featured as well.

A bound volume of the London Times from 1813 to 1815, presidential material (Coolidge, Ike and others), 1930s Supreme Court justice-signed photos, a 42-star flag and many campaign-related items will be offered in the political and historical arenas.

Art highlights include a rare pen and ink drawing by Stanton McDonald Wright and a pen and ink of one of the oldest churches in New England. Photos, autographs, posters, prints, postcards, calendars, almanacs, celebrity, railroad and travel represent a partial list of the paper-related lots that will hit the auction block.

A near set of Indian-head pennies, old silver, foreign coins and many mixed lots along with a host of paper money and fractional currency will start the day, followed by many railroad grade (Bunn Specials and many additional 21-jewel models) pocket watches, calendar and wristwatches in the field of horology. Shop contents to be offered include three watchmaker’s benches, cabinets filled with parts and material, and a Portescap VC-10 multistation cleaning system.

The sale will start at 9 am Saturday at the American Legion Hall at 94 Eastern Avenue. For information, call 207-641-2127.
