‘ARMOUR D’ARMOR’ ON VIEW AT LAFAYETTE COLLEGE ARTS CENTER APRIL 1

AVV 12-21 #681993

ALLENTOWN, PENN. — Lafayette College, Williams Center for the Arts, will present the exhibition “Amour d’Armor: Fear, Fantasy and Fashion in the New Age,” on view April 1–May 6.

Historically, the function of armor has been protection, although during some eras, such as the Renaissance, its use was primarily ceremonial and as fashion. The need for protection has guided human inventiveness throughout history.

In the complex modern age, the desire for safety may be greater than ever. In the quest for protection, contemporary inventors and artists alike have created wildly ingenious devices for modern protection that fuse practicality, fantasy, paranoia and fashion. This exhibition will explore recent “armor,” addressing contemporary responses to the need for protection. From the fantastic to the practical, this collection of objects reveals the obsessions of this age.

The exhibition is curated by Robert S. Mattison and Ida Sinkevic, Lafayette art historians. The center is in the college’s main campus on Hamilton and High Streets. For additional information, www.lafayette.edu/williamsgallery or 610-330-5361.
