ULLA SURLAND GEORGE CHAPLIN

ak/gs set 3-12 #691712

FAIRFIELD, CONN. — At Ulla Surland Gallery Eleven, “Vibration,” the work of George Chaplin, will be on view through April 14.

In 1951 Chaplin entered the Air Force, where he directed the art department for the Pacific Stars and Stripes. It was during this period that he decided to pursue painting as a lifelong career.

Following his discharge, he studied under Joseph Albers at Yale University and received his BFA in 1958 and MFA in 1960. He taught from the time of this graduation until 1991, when he retired as professor emeritus and director of studio arts at Trinity College. He has taught at other institutions including Pratt Institute, the Worcester Museum School, Choat, Foote and Silvermine. He has exhibited widely in the United States and in more than 70 countries.

Chaplin’s painting process is direct and energetic. Color is both the subject and the object of his paintings. He celebrates color for its emotional and spiritual impact.

Ulla Surland is at 11 Unquowa Road. For information, 203-259-1572.
