ak/lsb set 3/12

GREENWICH, CONN. — Join Bob Brier, senior research fellow, C.W. Post Campus, Long Island University, as he talks on “Napoleon in Egypt: The Origin of Egyptomania.” Napoleon Bonaparte: An archaeologist? An influence in the decorative arts? The father of Egyptomania? Absolutely. Through a slide presentation at the Bruce Museum, Monday, April 2, at 1:15 pm, Brier will discuss Napoleon’s unexpected role.

Two hundred years ago when Napoleon was in Egypt he brought, with 55,0000 troops, a small army of scientists and artists to study and describe every aspect of Egypt, resulting in the sensational publication The Description of Egypt. Egyptomania began changing the decorative arts forever.

Brier received his PhD in philosophy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the former chairman of the philosophy department at C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University and has been director of the National Endowment for the Humanities “Egyptology Today” program. Twice selected as a Fulbright Scholar, Brier has also received the Long Island University David Newton Award for teaching excellence in recognition of his achievements as a lecturer.

In 1994, Brier became the first person in 2,000 years to mummify a cadaver in the ancient Egyptian style, the subject of a National Geographic special Mr Mummy.

The lecture is presented by the Greenwich Antiques Society. The Bruce Museum is at One Museum Drive. The fee for nonmembers is $15. For information, 203-532-9757 or 203-869-9531.
