Career Center Announces Available Scholarships
The following Scholarships have arrived in the Career Center at Newtown High School. Applications and/or more information for these scholarships, as well as ones previously listed in The Bee, are available there. Please call Mrs McEvoy at 426-1915 if you have any questions.
Junior League of Greater Waterbury â A $1,000 grant will be awarded to a graduating student in the greater Waterbury area (includes Newtown) who has demonstrated commitment to volunteering in their community and has been accepted to either college or a technical, nursing, or business school. The grant is open to all students regardless of class standing or financial situation. Application with essay must be received in the Career Center by April 23, 2001.
Fred Davidson Memorial Scholarship Fund â For high school seniors who are residents of Newtown and continuing their education after high school graduation (colleges, universities, technical/professional schools, etc. qualify); who are or have been a participant in the Newtown Soccer Club and plan to contribute in some manner to the advancement of soccer in Newtown in the future; and demonstrate personal qualities deserving of this award. Applications must be in by April 23, 2001.
Newtown High School Blue & Gold Booster Club Scholarships â will award four (4) $1,000 scholarships to two females and two males as per the following eligibility requirements: 1) applicant must be a graduating high school senior at Newtown High School; 2) must have a grade point average of 2.5 or better in their senior year; 3) must have participated in a varsity sport during either their junior or senior year; 4) the applicantâs family must be a current active member of the Blue & Gold Booster Club for at least one full year; and 5) intends to further his/her education by attending an accredited college or two year technical or vocational program. The deadline for filing applications is April 15, 2001. Any applications received after that date will not be considered.
The Connecticut Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Benevento/CAHPERD Scholarship â A $1,000 scholarship for any graduating high school student who plans on attending a Connecticut collegiate institution and plans to pursue a certified program of studies leading to a bachelorâs degree in health (school health teaching), physical education, recreation, or dance. Applicants will be judged by scholarship, competence, future potential in chosen career, and general worthiness. Deadline for application is June 1, 2001.
Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN CT) â Will be awarding two scholarships in the amount of $500 each to two high school students. The scholarships will be awarded to students who have worked in a school community in support of GLSENâs mission. GLSEN strives to assure that every member of every school community is valued and respected, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. Criteria for eligibility are as follows: between the ages of 16 and 21 as of May 1; will attend an eligible secondary or post secondary institution next year; not a prior recipient; and a resident of Connecticut. Application must be postmarked by April 1, 2001.
USS Connecticut (SSN 22) Scholarship Program â the USS Connecticut is the second of the Seawolf-class submarines designed, built, and based in Groton, Connecticut. The Commissioning Committee established an annual scholarship program in the shipâs name and presents several scholarships every year to eligible members of the present and past crew or their dependents, and to eligible citizens of the state who plan to study at a Connecticut college or university. Last year six merit scholarships were awarded: two to dependents of members of the shipâs crew, and four to citizens of the state who planned to attend college or university in Connecticut. All scholarship awards are based on a combination of academic merit and merit demonstrated by involvement in relevant academic, civic, professional, and cultural organizations. Completed applications must be received by April 15, 2001.
Katherine Hill Pomeroy Scholarship â Four awards of $750 each will be made to Connecticut High School seniors who will be entering the University of Connecticut at Waterbury as full-time students in the fall of 2001. The award will be based on achievement, character, and financial need. Application deadline is March 30, 2001.
