Jewish-Christian Engagement Lecture At Fairfield

FAIRFIELD — On Monday, March 26, at 8 pm, Rabbi Irving (Yitz) Greenberg will deliver a talk entitled “Judaism and Christianity: From Contempt to Pluralism and Partnership,” as part of Fairfield University’s First Annual Lecture in Jewish-Christian Engagement.

Co-sponsored by two centers at the university, Carl and Dorothy Bennett Center for Judaic Studies of the College of Arts and Sciences and Catholic Studies Program, headed by Ellen M Umansky, PhD, and Paul Lakeland, PhD, respectively, the venture was established to explore areas of collaboration and intellectual exchange between the religious traditions of Judaism and Christianity.

Dr Umansky said, “Our idea was to hold a talk that would emphasize historical, theological, liturgical, and other encounters between Jews and Christians over the last two thousand years…”

Rabbi Greenburg is a world-renowned rabbi, community leader, and theologian with a doctorate from Harvard. Since the 1960s he has been engaged in a decades-long dialogue on developing a positive Jewish theology of Christianity. He currently is president of Jewish Life Network/Steinhardt Foundation. His recent book is entitled For the Sake of Heaven and Earth: The New Encounter Between Judaism and Christianity (Jewish Publication Society of America, 2004).

The lecture is free and will be held on campus, in Charles F. Dolan School of Business, on North Benson Road. Seating is limited. To register call Judaic Studies at 203-254-4000, extension 2066.
