RSO Will Feature ‘Beautiful Bach’ Selections In Next Concert Program

RIDGEFIELD — It will be an all-Bach evening of symphony music on Saturday, March 17, at The Ridgefield Playhouse featuring the work of both J.S. and J.C.Bach. David Kim, a world-renowned violinist, will appear as soloist, playing what are considered by many to be J.S. Bach’s most beautiful slow movements.

Mr Kim is a violinist who has gained international acclaim and presently serves as the concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra. He has had numerous solo engagements both in this country and around the world, including appearances with Seoul Philharmonic, Polish National Radio Orchestra and with symphony orchestras in Dallas, Indianapolis and Pittsburgh, among others.

Mr Kim was the only American violinist to win a prize at the 1986 International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.

The instrument on which Mr Kim performs is a J.B. Guadagnini violin made in Milan, Italy, and first played at tremendously successful concerts in London. The night’s two symphonies require intricate string playing with finales at breakneck speed.

Violin Concerto by Johann Sebastian Bach is one of two surviving violin concertos, both written “for the court of Anhalt-Kothen where Bach served as Kapellmeister between 1717 and 1723,” according to Courtenay Cauble’s program notes.

The evening’s final piece will be Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G Major by J.S. Bach, which Mr Cauble terms “a brilliant technical achievement in which Bach puts together dazzling solo virtuoso violin acrobatics and a masterfully structured figure in a breathtaking and yet light and airy amalgam.”

Guest conductor for the evening will be the young American conductor George Garrett Keast, who will be debuting with New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Oregon Symphony, Boise Philharmonic, Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra and Woodstock Mozart Festival during the 2006-07 season.

Single tickets range from $25 to $50 for adults, and $15 to $25 for students. For reservations and ticket information visit the orchestra’s website, RidgefieldSymphony.org or call 203-438-3889. Tickets can also be purchased at Ridgefield Music Store.
