The Regional YMCA of Western Connecticut’s Mako swim team won its third consecutive Yankee Cluster swim championship recently with lots of impressive performances … many from Newtown residents.

The three-day championship meet was held at Middletown High School with a field of 13 YMCA teams. The Makos won nine of the 10 age/gender categories up for contention with some of the fastest swimming seen all year.

In the 8 and under age group, the team dominated by winning the girls, the boys and the overall age category and scoring the most total points ever scored in this group.  For the girls, terrific swims were turned in by Hannah Makris (second in 50 free – 36.25; second in 100 individual medley – 1:32.34; second in 25 butterfly – 19.10), Kiley Banks (seventh in 25 back – 21.79) and Cami Delia (25 breast – 30.91).

The 9/10 year olds also swept, winning the girls, the boys and the overall age category.  The girls contributed great performances by Hannah Delia (100 free – 1:32.05) and Amanda Walsh (50 butterfly – 54.98).

In the 11/12 year old group the boys dominated. Outstanding swims came from Zach Carfi (seventh in 100 breast – 1:26.16), Tara Dawley (ninth in 200 individual medley – 2:48.80) and Aless Delia (200 free – 2:35.09).

The 13/14 category was powered by the girls with notable racing from Marlene Kroon (seventh in 100 breast – 1:24.67), Katie Fragoso (eighth in 100 breast – 1:25.97), Katie Adams (200 individual medley – 2:55.65), Janis Hubina (100 breast – 1:31.34) and Emma Whitley (50 free – 42.51).

For the boys, big points were earned by Abben Hung (fourth in 100 breast – 1:15.49, fifth in 200 individual medley – 2:25.61, seventh in 100 free – 1:01.01), Conor Donnelly (seventh in 200 individual medley – 2:40.45, eighth in 100 butterfly – 1:16.17, eighth in 100 breast – 1:21.89) and George Delia (seventh in 100 breast – 1:26.49).

For the 15 and over group, the girls dominated with the performances of Jaclyn Van Waalwijk (fifth in 100 free – 58.01, sixth in 50 free – 26.99, sixth in 200 free – 2:09.50), Jen Iassogna (11th in 100 back – 1:14.49), Meaghan Dawley (500 free – 7:08.60), Lizanne Kroon (500 free – 6:10.29, 100 free – 1:02.85). 

Anthony Fiore, Luke Fiore, Matt Iassogna, Stefan Toi and Hannah Makris also qualified for New Englands.

“These kids really brought it to the meet,” said head coach Roger Simmons. “They have trained hard all season and I am really proud of their success as a team.”
