Weekend Of ‘Woods’ On NHS Stage

The four-performance run of Into the Woods is underway before enthusiastic audiences at Newtown High, with tickets still available for evening and matinee shows through Sunday. Known for its storybook charm and musical sophistication, the show marks a fanciful end to the drama careers of a dozen NHS seniors.

On an ivy-draped set studded with massive tree trunks and a fringe of underbrush, a charming cast explores questions of fortune, honor, love, and ethical dealing. Composed by Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim, Into the Woods is a fast-moving twist on time-honored fables, centering on a woodland Baker and his Wife whose dream of starting a family cannot be realized unless they can break a witch’s spell.

Along the way, this Tony Award-winning musical revisits childhood tales and enlivens them with a series of grown-up twists and moral dilemmas. Suitable for audiences young and old, this lively, irreverent fantasy offers a poignant lesson about seizing opportunity and still trying to do the right thing.

As the 18-piece orchestra plays and actors zig-zag across the stage, the vocal skills of the cast members transport audiences to a place where the unexpected is a regular occurrence. Curtain time for Into the Woods is 7:30 pm on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and 2:30 pm on Sunday, March 18. Individuals and groups can purchase tickets by calling 270-8125 or by emailing itwtickets@aol.com. Price is $17 for adults ($15 on Thursday only) and $15 for senior citizens and students ($12 on Thursday).
