When Will It Be Greener In Newtown?
When Will It Be Greener
In Newtown?
To the Editor:
Congratulations to the leaders of Danbury who have the foresight to launch initiatives to âgo greenâ (Danbury News-Times, March 6, 2007). In addition to educational programs starting with their Climate Change Awareness Program, Mayor Boughton, Jack Kozuchowski, and others are planning to preserve open space and encourage clean energy (retrofitting cityâs vehicles to burn ethanol, solar panels at the landfill, and recovering waste gases at the treatment plant to fire a fuel cell). Even more recently (March 11, 2007) it is reported that new solar panels will soon be installed atop Danbury Hospital, the only hospital in the state to âgo solar.â
As a Newtown resident I have to wonder when the elected officials in my town will embrace the Greener is Cleaner concept. Whether or not one believes that global warming is an imminent threat, it is in our own self-interest (and the interest of our children) to preserve what we now have. We must acquire and preserve open space, protect our water resources including aquifers, and be creative about ways to lessen the impact of fossil fuel emissions. Many volunteers (including many commissioners and members of Roots for Newtown) are working hard to these ends. However, they are frustrated at times by mixed messages from our elected officials and by a political atmosphere that is currently fraught with animosity.
With St Patrickâs Day around the corner (thinking green, are we?) and more importantly Earth Day coming up, it would be a very good time to refocus our thinking and reestablish our priorities. Newtowners probably remember the bumper stickers proclaiming âItâs Nicer In Newtown.â How about an update: âItâs Greener In Newtown.â
Very truly yours,
