Gellert Breaks Harvard Steals Record
Gellert Breaks Harvard Steals Record
CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts â Sophomore guard Andrew Gellert broke the Harvard University single-season record for steals by swiping 74 â eight more than Mike Gielen (â89) and Keith Webster (â87) had for the previous record.
Gellertâs 2.7 steals a game led the Ivy League and ranks him 20th in the national. He had at least one steal in every contest and collected multiple steals 21 times, including two games (versus Brown and versus Washington & Lee) in which he grabbed six, one shy of the school record for a single game.
A starter in all 27 games â despite missing the end of the pre-season with a dislocated shoulder â Gellert averaged 6.8 points a game a 4.4 rebounds a game while dishing out 97 assists. He was sixth in the Ivy League in assists per game with 3.6 and added 13 three-point field goals along the way.
Gellert scored in double figures seven times during the year, highlighted by a personal-best 17-point effort in an early-season win over Lehigh University. Gellertâs season-high 10-rebound effort came in a victory at Sacred Heart.
The Crimson finished the 1999-2000 season with a 12-15 overall record, 7-7 in the Ivy League. Harvard joined Penn and Princeton as the only schools to finish in the top half of the Ivy League each of the past five years and the Crimsonâs 70 wins over that stretch are a school record.
Harvard will return nine letterwinners, including four starters, to the court for the 2000-2001 season.
A 1998 graduate of Newtown High School, Gellert was a varsity letterwinner in basketball, baseball and foortball. The was the Connecticut Post 1997-98 Basketball Player of the Year and was an All-State and All-SWC first team selection. Gellert is second all-time at Newtown High School, with 1,147 career points.
Also, as a senior at NHS Gellert joined the football team and set a Connecticut state record with 17 interceptions.
