A big first quarter helped propel the Newtown girls’ seventh-grade travel basketball team into the semifinals of the Jockey Hollow Tournament. Jenna Legros scored 17 points and Nora Lynn Shimko added 13 more to lead the locals to a 45-39 win over Bethel.

Meanwhile, the Newtown boys’ eighth-grade travel team was upended by Danbury in overtime in the TCBL divisional finals. Kevin Troy canned a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into the extra session.

Here are all the travel results:

Boys 8th –

Danbury 73, Newtown 69 (OT) – A tremendous game, where both teams left everything they had on the floor, went down to the final seconds. Kevin Troy hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime and finished with 29 points. Greg Rodden contributed 14 points and played well on both ends of the floor. Dan and Jason Smith did a terrific job at the point, combining for 10 points. Mike Maher, Greg Larnerd, PJ Cochrane, Dylan Clark and Bob Lapple scored key baskets and played well defensively.

Boys 7th –

Newtown 52, New Milford 36 – Newtown overcame some early shooting woes with solid man-to-man defense, and took a 10-point lead at halftime that it never relinquished. After trading baskets with New Milford during the third quarter, the locals broke the game open in the fourth quarter with many fast break opportunities set up by their defense. It was Newtown’s 16th win on the season. John Grimaldi and Kurt Nacewicz combined for 24 points to lead Newtown’s scoring. Dan Quinn and Ricky Gallucci kicked in 7 points apiece, and Ian Cooper and Cole Depuy added 5 points apiece.

Girls 7th –

Newtown 45, Bethel 39 – Newtown started off with a win in the first round of the Jockey Hollow basketball tournament due to a strong first quarter in which the girls outscored Bethel 18-4. Rachele Cox played well in the quarter, scoring four points and pulling in five rebounds before getting into foul trouble. Jenna Legros and Nora Lynn Shimko paced the scoring for the game with 17 and 13 points, respectively. Jordyn Good and Elissa Robertson also played well with Jordyn leading the team’s rebounding with eight and contributing four steals. Elissa Robertson had five points, four rebounds and two steals. The girls now advance to the semifinals and will play Monroe on Wednesday.

Girls 6th –

Wilton 27, Newtown 25 – The Lady Hawks lost a heartbreaker to Wilton in the semifinals of the Tri-County League. Newtown trailed throughout the first half and took the lead in the fourth quarter, but could not hold off Wilton’s offensive pressure in the final minutes. Sara Kelley led the scoring with eight points while Kate Bowen chipped in with. Kaitlin Marsden scored five points and ripped down seven rebounds while Jennifer Daily contributed four points. Susan Mason was strong off the boards as she grabbed eight rebounds and added a bucket for the Lady Hawks.
