A Spring Shower Of Quilts

SEYMOUR — What was once a handful of women meeting monthly to share their love of quilting is today a non-profit organization consisting of over 120 individuals, representing 31 Connecticut towns. The Connecticut Piecemakers’ Quilt Guild has evolved into a large group of women who share not only a love of quilting, but also an interest in promoting the art of quiltmaking within the community.

Each month the members get together to attend lectures, participate in workshops, share ideas and techniques, gain inspiration through their show-and-tell, obtain information and patterns from the guild’s extensive lending library, and form lasting friendships with fellow quilters.

On Saturday and Sunday, March 27-28, The CT Piecemakers will sponsor its tenth annual show, “Spring Shower of Quilts X.” The event will be at Seymour Middle School, 211 Mountain Road, and will run from 10 am to 5 pm. Admission is $6 for adults and $1 for children ages 3 to 12.

Hundreds of extraordinary quilts, created by ordinary people, will be on display. Visitors will be treated to a number of show highlights including a block challenge, doll exhibit, quilt appraisals, and free demonstrations and lectures.

Quilt enthusiasts will delight over the sea of products offered in the vendor mall. A quilt auction, scheduled for 1 pm on Sunday, will round out this event.

“Wintertide in Connecticut,” a raffle quilt, will be on display during the show. The mix-media quilt features a peaceful winter scene on a Connecticut farm. The quilt was designed and constructed by members of the guild. A majority of the proceeds from the raffle quilt will benefit Mercy Learning Center in Bridgeport and The Umbrella Group in the Valley area.

Quiltmaking will forever be seen as an important craft of the past and the “Spring Shower of Quilts” show demonstrates its presence as a valuable growing art form of today. Guild members hope attendees will marvel at the beauty and workmanship exhibited by the quiltmakers of Connecticut.
