Fairness And Reason
Fairness And Reason
To the Editor:
Newtownâs Board of Finance recently reviewed the education budget and it was apparent that they did their homework. They asked meaningful questions and offered thoughtful insights. They also listened as residents spoke overwhelmingly in support of education, frequently commenting on the need for improved economic development to augment property taxes. Nearly all speakers appealed to the Finance Board to keep school funding intact.
This budget dialogue is a familiar refrain of the spring season. But for Newtown, the dilemma is compounded: we are a town whose popularity is surging. As more people âdiscoverâ Newtown, rising enrollment burdens our school system and residential development strains town resources. Moreover, our increased popularity has resulted in a higher median income, which continues to trend upward. Unfortunately, as median wealth increases, state funding diminishes; Newtown is, in effect, a victim of its own success.
Ironically, one reason our town is thriving is because of its outstanding schools; our popularity is directly attributable to our academic excellence. The Board of Education realizes that sustaining this reputation requires diligence and commitment as well as adequate resources. We also realize that we must be mindful of residents for whom tax increases pose undue burdens. Our challenges are seemingly irreconcilable. But as a Board of Education member, I must remember our charge: I was elected to serve as an advocate for education. If I compromise this mission, I would not be fulfilling my role as advocate. I believe our budget proposal is reasonable and responsible, and that further reductions would threaten programs and result in class sizes that exceed our recommended guidelines. An effective school system, adequately funded, is our top priority.
The next step in the budget process is the Legislative Council public hearing on March 24, at Reed Intermediate School. The Legislative Council will consider both the education and the selectmenâs budget. Based on taxpayer input, they will determine a final number to be presented at a townwide referendum. I believe it is important for all concerned residents to attend this hearing and express opinions. Our town should not jeopardize what we have all worked so hard to achieve. We are an exemplary community; surely we can meet our challenges with fairness and reason.
Sincerely,
Lisa Schwartz
