IRS: Start Your Tax Return
HARTFORD â Tax Day, April 15, is less than a month away. The IRS is encouraging Connecticutâs 1.6 million filers to get started on their tax returns.
âSet aside time to get your tax records together or maybe even file your 2003 tax return,â said Dianne Besunder, IRS spokeswoman for Connecticut. âMost Connecticut taxpayers have already received their W-2 Forms and other tax documents. Itâs time to leap into the task of preparing your income taxes. If you have questions or are missing required forms, www.irs.gov is a great place to find what you need.â
Connecticut taxpayers can visit the IRSâ website to obtain forms, browse publications, get the answers to frequently asked questions, and even e-file returns through the IRS Free File program.
This year the IRS added a new feature to IRS.gov designed specifically for the individual taxpayers called 1040 Central. The new page pulls together much of the step-by-step information taxpayers need to prepare and file a return.
The page can also help taxpayers avoid errors when it comes to the Advance Child Tax Credit. More than 300,000 Connecticut families received advanced Child Tax Credit payments last year. Taxpayers must reduce their 2003 claimed credit by the amount of the advance payment check they received.
The amount of the advance payment was shown on Notice 1319 mailed to eligible taxpayers last year. Taxpayers who mislaid the notice can avoid an error that might delay their refund or the processing of their returns by checking the amount of their Advance Child Tax Credit at 1040 Central using an interactive feature called âYour 2003 Advance Child Tax Credit.â
The website also provides easy access to IRS e-file information including lists of e-filing tax practitioners by zip code and access to IRS Free File, the partnership with private-sector tax preparation software manufacturers. At least 60 percent of taxpayers are eligible to use free commercial online tax preparation software to e-file through the Free File Option.
Taxpayers who owe money can e-file now and schedule a payment as late as April 15 though a direct debit from their bank account.
