NEW HAVEN - Fresh off his first South-West Conference championship, CJ Maurer of Newtown High School captured a fifth-place finish at the CIAC Class L state diving championships last Thursday at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven.
NEW HAVEN â Fresh off his first South-West Conference championship, CJ Maurer of Newtown High School captured a fifth-place finish at the CIAC Class L state diving championships last Thursday at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven.
Maurer scored 365.25 points for his 11-dive repertoire â only 2.05 points behind Sebastian Cassetta of Staples (Westport) and 4.30 points behind Christopher Sanders of Notre Dame (West Haven). Daniel Mazzaferro of Cheshire won the state title with 443.20 points and was followed in second place by Mark Gilbert of Fitch with 412.30 points.
For Newtown, Steve Truitt scored 313.65 points to finish eighth, Bryan Lacouture scored 299.25 points to finish 10th, and Lauren Borruso scored 256.20 points to finish 17th. The fifth-place finish earned Maurer a shot at the CIAC State Open meet.
Things did not go quite as well for the Nighthawks in the swim trials held last Saturday at SCSU. Going up against some of the best swimmers in the state, the âHawks put together some great swims but no one finished in the top six to earn a trip to the finals (on Wednesday).
In the 200 medley relay, the foursome of Zack Moliver, Andrew Heller, Jake Maher and Chris Jacob went 1:47.01 to finish 10th. In the 200 freestyle, Jacob went 1:53.46 to finish 12th. In the 200 individual medley, Heller went 2:11.88 to finish 17th while Moliver went 2:12.28 to finish 20th and Maher went 2:16.25 to finish 23rd.
In the 50 freestyle, Truitt went 24.88 to finish 35th. In the 100 fly, Heller went 56.52 to finish 12th while Dave LaMarche went 1:04.44 to finish 29th. In the 100 freestyle, Jacob went 52.11 to finish 16th. And in the 200 freestyle relay, the foursome of LaMarche, Maurer, Maher and Truitt went 1:40.49 to finish 12th.
In the 100 backstroke, Moliver went 1:00.15 to finish 13th. In the 100 breaststroke, Maher went 1:07.51 to finish 13th. And in the 400 freestyle relay, the foursome of Jacob, LaMarche, Heller and Moliver went 3:34.37 to finish ninth.
