Selectmen Urge Change In Tax Abatement Ordinance

The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously Monday night to recommend to the Legislative Council an amendment to an ordinance for tax abatement for volunteers.
The proposed amendment would allow for tax abatement for nonresident volunteers who own businesses or property in Newtown. Currently, only volunteers who own residential property qualify for the tax abatement.
The proposal was made as a result of a request from the Board of Fire Commissioners.
The selectmen also voted unanimously to approve a resolution endorsing a Fair Housing Policy to ensure equal opportunity for all persons to rent, purchase, and obtain financing for adequate housing of their choice on a nondiscriminatory basis.
According to the resolution, state and federal fair housing law require that all individuals be given equal access to rental and home ownership opportunities and be allowed to make free choices regarding housing location.
The resolution states, âThe Town of Newtown is committed to upholding these laws and realizes that these laws must be supplemented by an Affirmative Statement publicly endorsing the right of all people to full and equal housing opportunities.â
First Selectman Herb Rosenthal said that the fair housing policy is not only a good thing to support but is also required for federal Housing and Urban Development funding.
Newtownâs Fair Housing Policy Statement, in part, states, âIt is both the policy and strong commitment of Newtown to promote Fair Housing opportunities in all its programs and housing development activities and to take affirmative action through education and implementation to ensure equal housing opportunities for all persons and families.â
Mr Rosenthal also signed a proclamation recognizing April as Fair Housing Month in the Town of Newtown.
The selectmen also reappointed Joseph Steinfeld and Jerry Peterson as Lake Zoar marine officers. They also appointed Philip Cruz to the Water Pollution Control Authority and Robert Rau, Brian Aumueller, and Bruce Walczak to the Economic Development Commission.
