J. Clark Andrews

J. Clark Andrews, 93, former Bethel town treasurer, died March 17 at Harborside/Glen Hill of Danbury. He was the husband of Arlene M. (MacGregor) Andrews.

He was the father of John C. Andrews, Jr, of Newtown.

He was born in Bethel, August 5, 1906, at the family home on Milwaukee Avenue, a son of the late John T. and Laura (Schmidt) Andrews. He grew up in Waterbury but returned to Bethel, where he had been a resident since 1937.

 Mr Andrews was employed as a district manager for the Commercial Credit Corp, retiring in 1973 after 23 years of service. He was active in Bethel town government, serving on the Board of Finance from 1958 to 1969, and most notably as its town treasurer for 12 consecutive terms from 1969 to 1993, retiring after 24 years of service under both Republican and Democratic administrations. In recognition of his many years of service to the Town of Bethel, the former Center School was renamed the J. Clark Andrews Center in 1981.

An avid gardener, cook, and fisherman, he was known for his clam chowder.

Besides his wife and son, he is survived by a daughter, Carol England of Miami, Fla., and another son, Robert K. Andrews of Bethel; a brother, Dayton Andrews of Clearwater, Fla., seven grandchildren, two great-grandsons; and two nephews.

Funeral services took place March 22 at the Bethel Funeral Home, 215 Greenwood Avenue, with the Rev Robert T. Johnson of the Bethel United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Wooster Cemetery, Danbury.
