Newtown Swimmers Break School Records, Place Fourth In Class L State Tourney

Newtown High School’s boys’ swimming and diving team placed fourth in the Class L State Championships at Yale University this week.

A trio of school records were set during the championships, which unfolded during the course of six days, beginning with the diving championships on March 12 and culminating with swim finals on March 17.

Pomperaug, with 834.5 points, won first place and was followed by Ridgefield (570), Amity (360), Newtown (325) and Simsbury (303) among the 19 competing schools.

Newtown junior Luke Fiore broke NHS records in the 200-yard freestyle event (with his sixth-place time of 1:47.29) and the 100 free (fourth, 48.45). Fiore was also part of the school record-setting 200 free relay team (also comprised of Tony Fragoso, Abben Hung and Chris Parker) which placed third in the meet in a time of 1:30.68.

The Nighthawks recorded several top-10 finishes. The 200 medley relay team (Fragoso, Mike Hubbard, Matt Iassogna and Hung) placed ninth in 1:44.73. Iassogna was eighth in the 100 butterfly (56.04). Alex Kron was fourth in the 100 backstroke (56.11).

Several Newtown swimmers were scheduled to compete in the State Open on Thursday (after The Bee went to press). For complete results, visit casciac.org.
