YMCA Mako Swimmers Win Fifth Straight Championship

The Regional YMCA of Western Connecticut Mako Swim Team posted its fifth straight win at the YMCA Yankee Cluster Championships held at Plainville High School recently. Thirteen teams from YMCAs across Connecticut participated. All events were in short course yards, with swimmers competing by age group in both individual and relay events. Newtown swimmer results are as follows:

Katelyn Adams of Newtown placed 22nd, 27th and 32nd respectively in the 100-yard backstroke (1:25.36), the 50 freestyle (31.24) and the 100 freestyle (1:09.13). Kiley Banks finished fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:44.36), 12th in the 50 freestyle (33.78) and 17th in the 50 butterfly (43.71). Noah Burhance placed 10th, 13th and 14th respectively in the 100 IM (1:32.19), 100 backstroke (1:36.17) and the 50 butterfly (46.31). Tara Dawley placed eighth, ninth and 10th in the 50 freestyle (27.61), 100 breaststroke (1:17.77), and 100 freestyle (1:00.11).

The Delia Family was represented strongly by Alessandra, Cameo, Colby and Hannah. Alessandra finished 16th in the 200 Freestyle (2:26.98), 36th in the 50 freestyle (30.32), 47th in the 100 freestyle (1:10.82), and also competed as the leadoff swimmer in the 200 freestyle Relay (31.64). Cameo competed in the 100 breaststroke (1:49.48) placing 18th, in the 50 breaststroke (52.40) placing 33rd, and the 50 freestyle (41.40) placing 71st. Colby finished 12th in the 25 butterfly (24.19), 26th in the 25 freestyle (19.50), 46th in the 25 backstroke (28.33), and swam lead off in the 100 freestyle relay (44.56). Hannah placed 27th in the 50 butterfly (44.16), 32nd in the 50 backstroke (44.64), and 56th in the 50 freestyle (37.62). Clare Donnelly placed 21st in the 100 backstroke (1:21.17), 33rd in the 100 breaststroke (1:34.61), and 37th in the 50 freestyle (30.41).

Adam and Anna Harrison swam a total of seven events. Adam finished fourth in both the 50 freestyle (27.37) and the 50 backstroke (33.88) and fifth in the 100 freestyle (1:01.75). He also was the leadoff swimmer in the 200 medley relay (33.50). Anna placed 15th in the 50 butterfly (43.64), 22nd in the 50 backstroke (43.73) and 36th in the 50 freestyle (37.15). Tommy Horan of Sandy Hook placed fourth in the 50 Freestyle (32.72) and the 50 Backstroke (38.55), and fifth in the 100 freestyle (1:13.91). Darren and Richard Huffman swam a total of five events. Darren placed 37th in the 25 backstroke (26.76) and 71st in the 25 freestyle (26.57). Richard placed first in both the 100 backstroke (1:07.22) and the 50 butterfly (29.79) and fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:09.02).

Siblings Adam and Mary Hufziger both swam. Adam placed 15th in the 50 butterfly (43.82), 33rd in the 50 freestyle (36.41) and 30th in the 100 freestyle (1:24.02). Mary placed fifth in the 25 freestyle (16.78), sixth in the 50 freestyle (39.21) and 16th in the 25 backstroke (22.23).

Michael Lally placed second in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.30), fifth in the 50 breaststroke (40.85), and ninth in the 200 IM (2:51.02). Robert Linden placed first in the 50 breaststroke (37.58) and fourth in both the 100 backstroke (1:12.23) and the 200 IM (2:37.60). Linden also swam leadoff in the 200 freestyle relay (28.08). Hannah Makris placed first in both the 50 freestyle (30.36) and the 50 breaststroke (38.59) and was second in the 50 butterfly (33.98). Her brother, Philip, placed 21st in the 25 butterfly (27.16), 41st in the 25 freestyle (21.33) and 57th in the 25 backstroke (30.53). Amanda Mele finished 22nd in the 50 freestyle (32.21), 35th in the 50 backstroke (45.69) and finished the 50 breaststroke (42.26). Kayleigh Shambelan placed 21st in the 50 breaststroke (44.35), 26th in the 50 backstroke (41.41) and 40th in the 50 freestyle (34.33). Dawson Stout placed first in the 100 backstroke (1:21.24), and second in the 100 IM (1:21.26) and the 100 butterfly (1:23.21). He also competed in the 200 medley relay (39.41) as the leadoff leg. Sandy Hook swimmers Kate and Mason Suba competed in a total of six events; Kate placed 42nd, 46th and 53rd respectively in the 50 freestyle (37.61), 50 backstroke (49.37) and the 50 breaststroke (1:03.75). Mason finished 20th, 44th and 52nd in the 25 breaststroke (45.06), 25 backstroke (27.77) and the 25 freestyle (22.29).
