In a five-game round robin event at Canterbury School in New Milford last weekend, the Newtown girls captured the District Indoor Soccer Tournament championship. The girls will advance to the State finals on March 25, also at Canterbury.

Indoor State Tournament

The Newtown Strikers claimed the Boys U14 Northwest District Indoor Tournament championship this past weekend at the Canterbury School Field House in New Milford. The Strikers defeated each of the three teams in their division and then went on to defeat the winner of the other division in the final to advance to the state tournament this weekend.

With a group of eight teams representing the Northwest District, the Strikers were placed in a division with New Milford, Brookfield, and Torrington. The Strikers held all of their division opponents scoreless while allowing only a single goal in the final.

Newtown faced off with an early match-up against long-time rival Brookfield. Neither team was able to mount much of an attack in the first half and Newtown, which had several players who had not yet played any indoor, put it together in the second half on goals from Mike Bonsignore and Matthew McFadden. Nathan Walzer held the Bobcats scoreless in the net while Jeremy Barczak and Derek Miles anchored the defense. Brian Smith and Peter Dittmar controlled the midfield.

Torrington was Newtown’s next victim and the solid defense of Dave Anderson and Ryan Keogler – in front of goaltenders Walzer and Andrew Fiscella – proved to be the difference. Patrick Kiely, Smith, Bonsignore and Walzer all scored in a 4-0 win.

Against New Milford, Newtown rallied behind a solid defense. McFadden, Anderson and Barczak were all defensive cornerstornes while goalies Dittmar and Fiscella recorded the shutout. Kiely, Miles and Dittmar all scored in the 3-0 win.

With the win, the Strikers advanced to meet Danbury PAL, which was undefeated and unscored upon in its three tournament games. But with two goals from Bonsignore and another from Mathew Miller, the Strikers upended Danbury, 3-1, for the Northwest District title. Smith and Dittmar were impressive in the midfield and Walzer shut down Danbury.

At the state tournament, the Strikers will face each of the other six district winners. The Strikers won a state tournament title as U12s in 1998 and hope to repeat as U14s.

In regular season action, the Strikers defeated Guilford 4-2 behind goals from Sean Rawson (2), Ryan Keogler and Mike Vanasse. David Kugielsky also played well on offense while Walzer was solid once again in the net.

BOYS U10

VIPERS 20, CHESHIRE 4: The Vipers moved to 5-0 on the year with a convincing win over Cheshire. Max Hoagland and Tony Gallucci scored four goals apiece while Justin Miller added three. Kevin Troy, Danny Smith, and Jason Smith each had two goals and Kevin Davies, Nick Kallivrousis and Drew Taylor each chipped in with a solo goal. The Vipers have just one game left, but have clinched first place in the division and are looking forward to a championship game.
