Hawleyâs First Grade News

Mrs Smith says, âAll of the children came back from vacation, rested and ready to learn. In their learning centers the children are making solar system puzzles and bracelets. The children have become very good readers and like to read during their free time. In their science corner they are amazed by the changes in our decomposing pumpkin. Everyone is happy that spring is here.â
In Mrs Mishicoâs class they are starting a new reading theme on cats. They continue to talk about the sun, moon and stars. They are studying about how food helps you grow. In math they are doubling numbers and practicing numbers to one hundred. They are also doing turn around.
Mrs Maringolaâs class is studying fairy tales. They are going to make gingerbread houses and are dressing up as princes, princesses, queens and kings. They are going on a field trip. She has nineteen kids in her class. They have four birthdays in March and four in May. They are going to study insects and then planets.
Mrs Lejaâs class is constructing units in science. They are building houses. Each student has to pick an animal and make a shadow box about that animal. They are writing a short paper about their animal too.
In math they are talking about tens and ones and are counting money. They are reading stories in a theme of being scared. They are also practicing their handwriting.
Mrs Attanasioâs class has begun an in-depth study of poetry. They are having an inside house field trip and are learning about reptiles and amphibians. They are having a special guest come in and talk to them about what makes everyone special. They are going nuts in the science lab with Mrs Cowden. They are going to be weather forecasters.
