Words Of The Day
With Phil Steele
On Tuesday, March 30, at 7 pm, Phil Steele, son of Radio Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Steele, will speak at The C.H. Booth Library at 25 Main Street.
Mr Steele will also be signing copies of a book he wrote with his father called, The Word For The Day: 65 Years of Wit, Wisdom and Mispronunciation, published in September 2002. By that Christmas, it was sold out and a new edition (2003) is now available.
Bob Steele was well known to millions in Southern New England as the morning voice of WTIC for more than half a century. When Steele died December 2002 at the age of 91, many Connecticut residents felt as if they had lost a close friend. In The Word for the Day the legendary radio humorist and lexicologist identifies hundreds of frequently mispronounced words that sometimes trip up even the best of speakers.
Generous sprinklings of Bob Steeleâs own cartoons, humorous asides, and stories, a century of photographs and some old magazine articles where he learned to blend âphun and philosophyâ are included in the book, and during his talk, Phil Steele will share colorful anecdotes of life with his father.
Phil Steele taught English at Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Penn., and he wrote movie criticism for the Manchester Journal Inquirer before taking up a career in law. He now practices in Hartford, concentrating on discrimination and employment issues.
The talk at the library is free, and refreshments will be served. Call the library at 426-4533 with any questions and to reserve a place.
