Skilled Volunteers Needed To Help Nonprofit Organizations

DANBURY — Business professionals who are in between jobs, recently retired or looking to make a difference can have an impact on the community through volunteering. The Greater Danbury Nonprofit Resource Center (GDNRC) is recruiting volunteers with professional skills to assist local nonprofit agencies.

Today more than ever, nonprofit organizations are faced with decreased funding and an increase in demand for their services. Professionals with experience in areas such as marketing, communications, human resources, finance and information technology can help greater Danbury nonprofits increase their capacity to serve the local community.

Nonprofit organizations define a project that they need help with and GDNRC then matches a volunteer with the appropriate expertise to complete the project.

“The organization and the volunteer both benefit,” said GDNRC volunteer coordinator Casey Levene. “The agency gains the expertise it needs to complete a project and the volunteer has a rewarding experience helping a nonprofit.”

GDNRC recently matched Newtown resdient Donald Leonard of Masterpiece Video with the New Milford VNA to create a historical video of the agency for its 90th anniversary celebration and fundraising event. The final product was a 12-minute video with historical footage, still photos, music and interviews that provided remembrances of the VNA’s beginnings and a look toward the future.

Mr Leonard found the experience rewarding.

“It really has been a pleasure working with the folks at the New Milford VNA,” he said. “Not surprisingly, it led to other projects and I’m really enjoying what has emerged from this volunteer assignment. It’s been way more than I expected and just an awfully good reason to give a little to a worthy organization.”

The Greater Danbury Nonprofit Resource Center is dedicated to bringing technical assistance to greater Danbury nonprofits. The resource center includes an online information center (www.GDNRC.org) and sponsors education and training workshops for nonprofit directors, staff and board members.

The center also offers organizational assessment and planning services. Nonprofit agencies can apply to have professional consultants assist them in addressing core management issues such as board development, financial planning, human resource management, marketing, etc.
