St Paul As The Man He Was

Like the ancient Dominican friars who traveled from village to village to preach the word of God, the Reverend Peter John Cameron has taken Blackfriars Repertory Theater and its play about Saint Paul on the road.

Harry Cornelius Cronin’s play, In Charge of The Fire, premiered last month to full houses at New Haven’s Little Theater. The two-man show, which tells the Bible story of how Paul came to believe in God while on the road to Damascus in 36 AD, will be performed by Blackfriars Repertory Theater at St Rose of Lima Church on Sunday, March 29. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for seniors and students in advance, and $10 at the door the day of the performance.

The play’s title is a reference to the biblical verse Revelation 14:18. The work itself deals with the life of the Apostle Paul of Tarsus at the time of his imprisonment in Rome. It is being produced by Blackfriars in commemoration of the Jubilee Year of the Apostle Paul observed by the Roman Catholic Church, June 2008 to June 2009.

In Charge of the Fire encourages audiences to see Saint Paul as the man he was, not just the saint. The work explores Paul’s conflicts, the fact that he was disliked, and also how he struggled.

The play will be directed by Father Peter John Cameron, OP, the artistic director of Blackfriars. In Charge of the Fire stars Dana Sachs as Saint Paul and Thomas Perretta as Paul’s companion.

The Newtown performance will begin at 7 pm. In Charge of the Fire is performed in one act without intermission; the length of the performance is approximately 90 minutes.
