Gas Price Hikes Aren’t Affecting Town Fuel Costs

The increase in gas prices may be hitting the pockets of the average consumer, but the town of Newtown has not been affected, according to Public Works Director Fred Hurley.

Mr Hurley said the town buys its gasoline from Chevron at a fixed price at the beginning of the year. All prices are based on the New Haven harbor where the majority of the state’s gasoline comes in.

“We’re running on like a buck a gallon. It’s a fixed price for the whole year. There’s very little variance in our prices. The prices stay steady. We’re insulated either way, whether prices go up or down,” Mr Hurley said.

Newtown’s fleet of cars, buses, and trucks numbers 180. All of them run on high test, high grade fuel. The town is on course to burn a total of 186,000 gallons of diesel and unleaded gasoline this year.
