In addition being a grand epic costume drama, the film is also an uncompromising historical portrayal of Queen Victoria and her relationship with John Brown, an earthy Scottish Highlander. Many would have considered these two the original odd couple.

Dame Judi Dench plays Queen Victoria, a woman so knee deep in grief over the death of her beloved husband Prince Albert that she finds herself prey to an âunfettered morbidityâ years after his death. Her family and servants, desperate to revive her, send for John Brown, the equestrian caretaker of her Balmoral retreat, hoping the queenâs belief that âhighlanders are good for the healthâ will appeal to her sagging spirit.
Brash and impudent, Brown is played by Billy Connolly. Viewers quickly understand how even the bitter queen herself was defrosted by his presence.
An unconventional and captivating love story, Mrs Brown will be screened on Tuesday, April 11, at 1 and 7 pm. There is no charge to attend. BYOP (bring your own popcorn) and BYOT (tissues), and the library staff will take care of the rest.
