School Hiring Activities

Kick Into High Gear

Each year the Newtown schools must recruit and hire high quality teachers and other staff to make sure students get the education and support they need. This recruitment and hiring process has been and will continue to be challenging for a number of reasons.

The US Department of Education estimates that over the next 5 years two million teachers will be needed to replace retirees and to accommodate a burgeoning enrollment.

The number of college students presently preparing for a career in public education is not expected to meet this demand. Newtown has already begun to experience the effects of retirements at a time when enrollment is growing. These realities mean that the Newtown schools must energize their recruitment, hiring, and retention efforts in order to attract and keep high quality teachers.

The first step in these efforts is recruitment. The Newtown schools are engaged in a variety of activities including visits to college campuses, posting of openings on local, regional, and national Web sites, advertising in newspapers and professional journals, and personal contacts.

This year Newtown schools are co-sponsoring a local Educator’s Job Fair from 9 am to 3 pm, on Saturday, April 8, at Roger Ludlowe Middle School in Fairfield. Interested job candidates are asked to bring resume and college transcripts.
