Family: My husband Kevin, our children and son-in-law and daughter-in-law-to be, and our grandchild.
Pets: We have one very spoiled pandemic dog.
How did you meet your husband? We met through a friend of ours who we’re still friends with, the week after he graduated high school and I was a junior in high school. We dated for seven years and then we were married.
How long have you lived in Newtown? We bought our first house here in 1990. We’ve been here ever since, and we’re thrilled to have two of our three children buy houses in Newtown now. Our youngest still lives with us, and we are a triangle with the other two. We’re all within about two miles of each other. We never expected this and we just love it.
Are you a member of any clubs, organizations, and/or communities of faith? I have been a member of Newtown Congregational Church since 1995, but I’ve been attending since 1990. It’s always been my community, that and play groups and all the different sports my kids have played.
I volunteer at Cornerstone, and run Hospitality Hall Pantry at the church. We do dairy, nonperishables, and limited meat and frozen vegetables, depending on the season and our budget. Most people come and take little bits of stuff each week; some will come once a month. Hospitality Hall is open any time the church is open. Come growing season we have an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables.
We receive donations from members of the church. We also receive a lot of regular donations from Moms Show Up, Real Food CT, Newtown Woman’s Club, Newtown Lions Club, Troop 270, and NCC Circle of Hope, among others.
While I’m not on the Congregational Care Committee, I do enjoy cooking for people, often for members of our church. I try to find things I can do but my first job is taking care of my granddaughter, Monday through Friday. Her parents say they’re lucky I can do this, but I say I’m lucky I get to do this.
I’m also a member of EverWonder Children’s Museum. We love them. What an asset, to have them in town.
What do you like to do with your free time? I love to be in my pool all summer. I open it early, usually mid-April, and sometimes keep it open until Halloween. Even if it’s chilly I love to be in there, in the sun. I also love to plant a lot of flowers in the spring.
I also cook. My kids come home, usually Saturday or Sunday, and they’ll all be here so I’ll typically cook a nice meal and we’ll all sit together and talk. It’s so much fun to listen to them, and I love watching them.
Favorite music? I enjoy Billy Joel, Meat Loaf, and Top 40, but my real genre these days is Raffi, Joy Bloom, Principal Al, and Francine Wheeler.
Favorite foods? Lobster, short ribs, pasta, and vegetable salad.
Favorite color? Blue.
What is something you cannot live without? My family.
What is your proudest accomplishment? My kids being successful and happy adults, and our life in Newtown. I love living here.
Favorite place to travel? Anywhere there’s water to look at. I especially love to go to the islands. We’re doing our third year as a family in Narragansett this summer, in a house with a water view.
What is your favorite thing about Newtown? The friendliness, and the willingness of people to help each other. And the schools.
Do you have a personal credo? Just be kind and happy. I also always say find something you like to do and do that.
