Hunt For Garlic Mustard

 At Sticks & Stones Farm

Naturalist, author, and environmental educator “Wildman” Steve Brill will lead a wild food and ecology tour Saturday, April 10, at Sticks and Stones Farm in Newtown.

The 30-minute talk and 90-minute tour of the farm begins at 2:30 pm, at 201 Huntingtown Road. The Sticks and Stones stone masonry farm and retreat features a wide variety of habitats — a mountain, meadows, woods, cultivated areas, and fields, and wetlands, with associated wild plants and mushrooms.

Join Mr Brill in looking for chickweed, dandelion greens, daylily shoots, mild-flavored shepherd’s purse, spicy hairy bittercress, lemony sheep sorrel, sassafras, mullein, and garlic-flavored field garlic and garlic mustard, a prolific vegetable that protects itself from insects by smelling and tasting like garlic. The year’s first wild mushrooms, oyster, tree ears, and enoki, may be discovered as well.

For more information on Mr Brill’s programs and philosophy, visit wildmanstevebrill.com. Cost for the program is  $25 for adults, $10 for children under 12.

Call 914-835-2153 at least 24 hours ahead to reserve a place. Visit SticksAndStonesFarm.com for directions.
